“We are stewards of this historic architecture, for it belongs not to the University, but to the World.”

-Alice J. Raucher, Architect for the University of Virginia

Founded in 1907, the purpose of the Colonnade Club is, “to foster social, cultural, and intellectual interchange among its members and to promote the welfare of the University and its faculty.” In fulfilling this mission, the Club utilizes and serves as the primary steward for Pavilion VII (West Lawn) and Hotel E (West Range). Both buildings are part of the Academical Village, Mr. Jefferson’s original design and footprint for the University. As such, they are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage List, a roster of properties of international cultural significance and the only American college campus to hold that distinct honor.

The Academical Village is one of the most iconic architectural sites in America, but time, constant use, and the elements have left our treasured home in need of renovation and repair. Moreover, as our community continues to grow with increasing faculty and student populations, so too does the need to provide both ample, centralized gathering space and a tranquil respite for our faculty from the bustle of Central Grounds and the frenzied pace of the academic year. The Club wants these spaces to remain true to the University’s original, central purpose to engage, connect, and inspire students and faculty, learners, and scholars.

The Colonnade Club embarked on a massive renovation of Pavilion VII in the early 2000s and has now turned its attention to Hotel E and the Hotel E Annex (1895) on the West Range --spaces that haven’t been meaningfully changed in over 30 years.

In close partnership with The Office of the Architect for the University and its Historic Preservation team, as well as experts from Facilities Management, we have a comprehensive renovation planned for Hotel E beginning summer 2020. From a new floor, to rebuilding a historically-accurate entrance, to upgraded service and special event amenities, Hotel E will be the space for faculty and the University community to gather on Grounds. Won’t you join us in this exciting endeavor?
